Lawncare - more than just mowing and strimmingMany of us mow our lawns and feel content by a job well done - there is something satisfying about mowing the lawn. Some of us know how much happier we would feel if we only had the time to mow the lawn but that's a different story.
There is more to lawncare than just mowing. To keep the grass in tip top condition takes a little effort: Mowing The first 'mow' of the year should be given using a higher setting than usual on your lawnmower. The lawn shouldn't be too wet as this will tear the grass leaving an uneven cut. If the weather is hot for a longer period than usual don't cut the grass on too low a setting. Weed and Feed What to do with those determined little weeds that get a hold in our lawn and seem to multiply? Well, sometimes we can keep on mowing the heads off them and hope they go away - this may work - better still to dig them out if you have the time and the patience, best of all a good quality weed and feed. Compared to a few years ago, many of the weed and feed products available these days are fairly environmentally friendly. If you lawn is plagued by weeds this could well be your best option. Scarifying Scarifying used to be done by hand using a rake. Thankfully, these days a scarifying machine can cut the spent and save the gardener an aching back. Thatch and moss (after it has been killed using lawnsand) are removed leaving the lawn in a much healthier condition. Gardeners should scarify lawns in autumn. Raking It's a good idea to remove fallen leaves, if left on the lawn they may cause dead patches. They can be removed with the gentle use of a spring rake. A gentle raking of the lawn, especially in spring/autumn can also remove the build of debris so making the job of scarifying much easier. Aerating Regular mowing and lawn traffic compacts the soil. This is bad for grass roots and any air is squeezed out of the soil. This can have a diverse effect on a lawn. When a lawn is aerated spaces of air are created which allow the lawn 'to breathe'. This improves grass quality and drainage. Strimming When grass is left too long it needs to be strimmed first. Strim to a length to which a lawnmower will be capable of cutting on a 'high blade level'. A lawn should never be strimmed too short. The next cut a few days later should be on normal blade height.
