Maintenance - year round gardening

Winter

Prune trees and shrubs. Spread compost around perennial plants and fruit trees.
Pick up fallen leaves. If you have a large enough space (and lots of time and patience) the leaves can eventually be used as leaf mould - a wonderful, natural mulch.
Cut back dead flower stalks. Cover frost sensitive plants.

Spring

Be on the lookout for insect pest problems such as aphids - if present treat these immediately. Remove dead flowers to encourage new blossoms.
In hot spells reapply mulch around perennials to protect them. Maintain the compost heap. Spread compost onto beds.
Apply grass seed to patchly lawns - the seed should be mixed with compost, topsoil and lawn sand. If planting out young seedlings, protect from late frost or wait a few weeks if in a particularly cold spell.

Summer

Watering is so important in dry spells. A good water butt system may be a good investment. Weeds grow like wild-fire at this time of year so lots of weeding to be done in the garden. Dead-head plants, shrubs or trees that have already bloomed. Roses will bloom a second time if dead-headed properly.

Autumn

Mulch perennial plants ready for the colder weather. Cover areas where wood bark chips ahve become thinner with fresh wood bark chips. Continue to make compost using natural material that will rot well. Plant perennial flowers and shrubs. Protect sensitive plants from frost.
